Judge Rejects R.Kelly’s Third Request For Early Release Amid Coronavirus Crisis

2 Min Read

A judge has rejected R.Kelly’s request to leave jail early for the third time in a row while he awaits trial on charges of sexually abusing young girls.

Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R.Kelly had requested for early release from jail due to the possibility of him contracting coronavirus in prison because he is pre-diabetic.

R.kelly’s lawyers had said the R&B singer’s life is at risk because the prison has put in few precautions in place to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

While dismissing Kelly’s application, the judge said Kelly’s crimes involve the sexual abuse of minors that stretched for almost 25 years, and allegations like those do not merit bail.

In her decision on Friday, US District Judge Ann Donnelly wrote: “I do not agree that a diagnosis of pre-diabetes presents a compelling reason for the defendant’s release.

“While the CDC has identified diabetes as a risk factor for COVID-19, the same is not true for prediabetes, a condition that affects nearly one in three American adults.”

She noted that prison doctors were working “with him to implement lifestyle changes like a better diet and exercise, to ensure Kelly’s safety while incarcerated.”
