Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been awarded the “African Peace and Security Leader of the Year 2020”.
The award was conferred at the 9th edition of the African Leadership Person of the Year Awards organised by the African Leadership Magazine.
An elated Jonathan on Friday posted pictures of the award certificate and plaque and captioned it: “Today, at the 9th edition of the African Leadership Person of the Year Awards, I was honoured as the African Peace and Security Leader of the Year 2020.
“I thank African Leadership Magazine for recognising my modest contributions to peace in Africa.”

Since leaving office on May 29, 2015, Dr Jonathan has been involved in numerous efforts to promote peace and stability on the African continent.
In July 2020, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) appointed him as a special envoy to lead the sub-regional body’s mediation mission in Mali.
In December 2020, the government of The Gambia invited him to support the process of building national consensus and backing for the ongoing constitution review process in the country.
He has therefore on several occasions visited Banjul to facilitate the consultations for advancing interparty dialogue to facilitate the review process.
The Gambian authorities said they invited Dr. Jonathan “as the eminent person to facilitate the process of the dialogue because of his neutrality and proven record in democratic and constitutional reforms”.
