Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva, bravely opens up about the challenges she and her husband, Olu Jacobs, have faced as he battles with dementia, shedding light on the impact it has had on their marriage. In a candid interview with media personality and actress, Nancy Isime, Silva shares their journey of navigating this difficult illness together.
Silva begins by expressing admiration for her husband, describing him as a fantastic spouse and devoted parent who fulfilled his responsibilities diligently. Reflecting on their early years, she fondly recalls how Jacobs was not only her best friend but the center of her world even before they tied the knot. However, their relationship has undergone significant adjustments due to his illness.
Acknowledging the hardships they have faced, Silva admits that it hasn’t been easy. She reached a point of acceptance, recognizing that the reality they now live in is vastly different from what it once was. She explains that her husband, whom she married, is no longer fully present 80 percent of the time due to the effects of dementia. Despite these challenges, Silva still holds deep love for him.
Silva highlights Jacobs’ remarkable qualities as a father to their children and an extraordinary husband during the times he was fully present. She cherishes the memories of their strong bond and friendship. However, she acknowledges that the man she knew before is gradually slipping away due to the progression of the illness.
Throughout their marriage of 37 years, Silva and Jacobs have weathered numerous trials and tribulations, including the initial hurdles they faced in the early years. Having known each other for a remarkable 42 years, including five years of dating before marriage, they have built a strong foundation of love and companionship.
As Silva comes to terms with their current reality, she now sees herself in a different role. Instead of a conventional husband-wife relationship, she sees herself as a caregiver, caring for her husband as she would her father. She has found strength in accepting the truth of their situation and continues to provide unwavering support and love.
