John McCain: Trump Defends ‘Poor’ Reaction to Senator’s Death

2 Min Read

Donald Trump has joked about his Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, stating that she had a nervous breakdown over his treatment of the deceased Senator John McCain.

The President said this while refusing questions asked about Senator McCain, especially questions about whether he’d have been a better President than Barack Obama

While he refused to answer, Huckabee-Sanders was staring daggers at him and on noticing this, he joked that Huckabee-Sanders was having a ‘nervous breakdown’

Trump said: “I don’t want to comment on it,

“I have a very strong opinion.”

“Maybe I’ll give you that answer some day later,” Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg.

The President was also defensive of his actions stating that he feels he properly honoured the War veteran and former presidential candidate.

The White House lowered its flags to half-staff immediately after McCain’s death, which was Saturday, but they were up again by Monday.

This drew criticism from many quarters with many stating that this was poor form from the President.

While the Federal code stipulates that the White House flags be flown at half-mast on the day of the death and the following day for a fallen member of Congress, it has become something of a tradition to keep it at half-mast till the burial of the Congress member.

Trump continued to defend himself after his decision to go to a rally in Indiana while McCain’s body arrived in Washington for his memorial service.

He said: “We had our disagreements and they were very strong disagreements,

“I disagreed with many of the things that I assume he believed in.”

He also rejected the notion that he failed to unite the nation in the wake of the Senator’s death.

He said: “No, I don’t think I did at all,

“I’ve done everything that they requested and no, I don’t think I have at all.”

“I respect his service to the country.” he concluded
