Joe Cole Proposes Solution to Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Woes

Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has offered his insight into the club’s ongoing goalkeeping dilemma, suggesting Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels as a potential solution.

Cole voiced concerns over what he perceives as systemic issues within Chelsea’s goalkeeping setup. Despite Robert Sanchez establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper under Enzo Maresca at the start of the season, he was recently dropped following several costly mistakes. This led to Filip Jorgensen, a summer signing, stepping in, only to face significant criticism for his performances in Chelsea’s recent losses to Brighton and Aston Villa.

In a recent episode of The Dressing Room Podcast, Cole highlighted the instability in Chelsea’s goalkeeping department. “There is something systemically wrong because you can’t have nine goalkeepers on your books and not know which one is your number one,” Cole remarked. He pointed out that Chelsea had Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic out on loan, alongside several promising young goalkeepers, yet still struggled to find a reliable option.

Cole believes Matz Sels, the 32-year-old Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, could be the answer. “Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league at the moment? Sels from Forest. He’s assured, makes saves. I don’t know whether he’s having a golden period, but they are out there. You’ve just got to pick the right one,” Cole stated.

With Chelsea’s goalkeeping conundrum showing no signs of resolution, the club may need to heed Cole’s advice and consider new options to stabilize their defense.
