Jigawa Government has pledged to build a 300-bed capacity prison in Dutse, the state capital.
The Controller of Prisons in Jigawa, Alhaji Magaji Abdullahi, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Wednesday.
Abdullahi said that Gov. Muhammadu Badaru also promised to construct new building to decongest the old colonial prison built in 1936 in Dutse.
He said that if the building of the new prison edifice becomes a reality, the prison will be relocated from its present site to Limawa Warwade Road.
The controller said that the new prison would contain educational and recreational facilities and a workshop for training of inmates.
According to him, the intervention by the state government had become necessary because about 75 per cent of the inmates are indigenes of Jigawa.
Abdullahi stated that arrangements were on to partner with the state government on agriculture.
He said that this would make the prison inmates robust and vibrant so that after serving their jail terms they would be useful to themselves.
Abdullahi pledged to transform the prison service in the state into an efficient and professional organisation with respect for human dignity.
He commended Badaru for the reconstruction of Babura Satellite Prison, reconstruction of Juvenile Centre at Babara, sinking of boreholes in some prisons formation across the state among others. (NAN)
