Jailed former footballer Adam Johnson was beaten up in the prison showers after refusing clean hair from a plughole and then asking a fellow convict ‘Do you know who I am?’, an inmate has claimed.
Johnson, who was jailed for six years at Bradford Crown Court for grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, was recently moved to Moorland prison in Doncaster from Frankland Jail in Durham so he could be closer to girlfriend Stacey Founders, 26, the mother of his year-old daughter.
According to an inmate at Moorland, Johnson, who was cleaning the showers, was told by a fellow con to remove a clump of hair from a plug hole, to which Johnson replied ‘F*** off’ and then ‘Do you know who I am?’
‘The bloke punched him in the face and Johnson defended himself,’ a witness told Daily Star Sunday.
Other inmates broke up the fight, the witness said. He added that Moorland, one of the UK’s most modern prisons, housed some ‘pretty tough blokes’.
Johnson, who earned £60,000-a-week at Sunderland, is appealing his conviction.
The 28-year-old also played for Middlesbrough and Manchester City.
