Jahi explosion: Abuja to monitor, scrutinise sales of gas

2 Min Read

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) says it will henceforth monitor and scrutinise the sale of domestic gas in the council area as part of measures to check incidences of explosion.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on Feb. 24 gas cylinders exploded in Jahi 11 village, Jahi district of Abuja killing about 23 persons.

The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abdullahi Candido, said this while reacting to the incident in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Dayo Lawal on Thursday in Abuja.

Candido said a committee had been set up by the council to study how gas and its accessories were displayed and sold in the council.

” This move is against the backdrop of rampaging fire incident in Jahi II village, which occurred as a result of gas cylinders explosion that killed about 23 people,“he said.

He said that when the committee submits its report, the Council would come up with a white paper to enable it take a decision to guide against its reoccurrence.

“There are specific areas that gas and its accessories are supposed to be sold. They must never be within the community.

NAN also reports that the AMAC chairman announced a cash donation of N690, 000 to the victims when he paid a condolence visit to the Chief of Jahi II.

Candido said that the council could not settle the hospital bills of all the victims because of its dwindling resources.(NAN).
