I’ve spent N300m on striking ASUU lecturers – Orji Kalu

Orji Kalu

Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to make a deal with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that will end the ongoing strike by the union.

He made the appeal in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday.

Kalu described the six-month-long strike as “financially draining”, revealing that his foundation had spent N300 million to cater for some ASUU members affected by the strike across the country.

“For the sake of the lecturers who have no other source of income but salaries earned. For the sake of the undergraduates who may lose interest in education should the strike not end soon. I appeal to the Federal Government to reconsider their stance and make a deal that would lead to the end of the ASUU strike.

“The consequences of the strike are also financially draining for many of us. Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation management just informed me how the foundation has spent over N300 million on our ASUU friends across the country.

“There are global economic challenges and Nigeria is not an exemption but the Federal Government must prioritize the ASUU issues and call off the strike no matter the price,” Kalu said.

The Herald can report that the Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke-led ASUU has been on strike since February 14.
