An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday heard how a 23-year-old suspect, Opeyemi Adeleke, stole pants belonging to one Gift Sunday while she hung them out to dry.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Muslim Jafani, told the court that Adeleke went to Sunday’s home in the Agowande area of Osogbo around 1am, stole her pants and took took them away.

The charge of stealing against the suspect read, “That you, Opeyemi Adeleke, on Monday, January 21, 2019, around 1am in the Agowande area of Osogbo seized the pants of one Gift Sunday without her consent and for reasons best known to you.”

Jafani said the accused committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 249 (D) and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34. Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

However, the accused pleaded guilty to the offences, saying that although he stole the pants, he returned them after five minutes.

Adeleke claimed to have returned them because his conscience pricked him, and pleaded for clemency from the court.

The defence counsel, Susan Ajeigbe, prayed the court to grant the accused bail, promising to always present him for trial.

But the presiding magistrate, Modupe Awodele, ruled that the accused be remanded in the Ilesha Prison and djourned for ruling on the bail application on February 2, 2019.
