The presidency has reacted to Governor Godwin Obaseki’s victory in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Edo State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Obaseki winner over 14 other candidates, including All Progressives Congress (APC) standard-bearer, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, announced the result of the election on Sunday.

Obaseki of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 307,955 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu with 223,619 votes.

Taking to Twitter, Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Bashir Ahmad tweeted a message from the president saying that Obaseki’s election was democracy in action.

He wrote, “President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the winner of Edo State governorship election, Governor Godwin Obaseki and urged him to show grace and humility in victory.”

Ahmad quoted the president as saying, “My commitment to free and fair elections is firm, because without free and fair elections, the foundation of our political and moral authority will be weak.”
