The Nigerian Ambassador to Niger Republic, Mohammed Usman, has debunked reports of his expulsion by the military junta in the neighbouring West African country.
The diplomat made the clarification amid widespread reports on Friday that the military junta had given him 48 hours to leave the country.
“I was not given any ultimatum to leave the country. The report is false,” TheCable quoted Usman as saying during a Saturday phone call.
Report of the Nigerian ambassador being asked to leave gained traction following a similar order given to the French Ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Itte.
In a Friday statement, Niger said the decision to expel the French ambassador followed his refusal to honour an invitation extended to him by the country’s Foreign Affairs minister and “other actions by the French government contrary to the interests of Niger”.
