It’s a shame Nigerian politicians are proud of rigged elections – Bishop Oyedepo

The Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo, has mocked Nigerian politicians for celebrating victory in rigged elections, in apparent reaction to the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Oyedepo, who spoke at the church’s Thanksgiving Service on Sunday at Canaanland, Ota, said that Nigeria should embrace electronic voting like many developed countries.

However, he lamented that the nation was still proud of its manual form of voting that has proved to be fraught with irregularities, including voter intimidation by political thugs.

The popular cleric slammed politicians for rejoicing when they emerge victorious from such a rigged election.

He said, “Other developed countries around the world had developed their mode of voting into a digitised method, but it’s a shame that in Nigeria, we still queue up to vote, and somebody would still be intimidated by thugs. With these, it’s a shame how politicians in this part of the world are proud of elections marred with rigging.”

Oyedepo disclosed that the church-owned Covenant University stipulates expulsion as punishment for engaging in examination malpractice, urging Nigeria to adopt a similar method to punish election riggers.

“In Covenant University, any student caught indulging in examination malpractice, is gone. It does not matter if his or her father is the head of United Nations or not,” he said.

The bishop however prayed that there won’t be any bloodbath in any part of Nigeria as a result of the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly elections, saying: “Every spirit of thuggery in Nigeria shall be silenced and every forces that would not let Nigeria rest shall be laid to rest and silenced forever.”
