Popular Hollywood actor, Robert Downey Jr has been granted official pardon for a drug conviction that sent him to prison nearly 20 years ago.

He was, along with about 90 others, granted pardon by the Governor of California, Jerry Brown.

The pardon was granted to people who had been out of custody for 10 years and had proved they had turned their lives around within the period.

Downey Jr, who is known mostly as the lead actor in the Marvel film series Iron Man, was sent to prison for violating his probation after being caught in his car with cocaine, heroin and a gun, while speeding.

While the prison term will not be wiped off his record, his voting rights have been restored with the pardon.
