International Students Day: Ondo to pay bursary soon

Ondo State Government on Saturday revealed that it would soon commence the disbursement of its bursary scheme to students.

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu disclosed this at the celebration of the 2018 international students day ceremony in Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this year’s theme is: ‘The right to peace: the universal declaration of human rights at 70.’

The International Students Day is set aside by the United Nations in honour and remembrance of students who lost their lives in Prague, while protesting the callous killing of innocent people in 1939 during the second World War.

Akeredolu, represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Mr Olugbenga Ale, said his government was committed to the welfare and wellbeing of students, especially from the state, in any part of the world.

He said the ongoing renovation by government in schools across the state was also to give students needed requisites for a better future.

The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye said the ministry was partnering with sister agencies to ensure that there would be sustainable development in the education sector.

Yusuf-Ogunleye, represented by a Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Dupe Esofone, said one of the objectives of the event was to recognise the contributions of students to nation building.

The president of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), Emmanuel Akeredolu, thanked the government for being alive to the plight of students in the state.

On his part, President of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) Ondo State chapter, Adewunmi Adebowale, called on government at all levels to see the rejuvenation of the education sector as a collective responsibility.

Also present at the event included representatives of the nine tertiary institutions in the state, including selected secondary schools and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
