Insecurity: UK marks 21 Nigerian states as unsafe

2 Min Read

The United Kingdom, through its Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has listed a total of 21 states it considers as being unsafe to be in.

In the report, British citizens were advised against traveling to such places in the country as the recurrent security challenges make them easy targets for criminals.

It equally revealed that there has been an increase in criminal activities across the country since 2018 with Boko Haram striking in the North East, bandits kidnapping in the North-West, and Militants operating in the South-south regions.

Areas with the highest risk of criminal attacks, according to the report, are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, and some areas in  Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states.

FCO further stated that while the aforementioned states should be avoided totally, places such as Bauchi, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kogi Sokoto, Kebbi, Bayelsa, Rivers and Abia States should only be visited when necessary.

The report read, “Attacks could be indiscriminate and could affect western interests as well as places visited by tourists. Besides Abuja, other major towns and cities remain particularly at risk, including Kano and Kaduna.

“The security environment in the northeast has deteriorated since 2018 and there is a heightened risk of kidnap.

“There is also a high threat of criminal kidnap in the Niger Delta region and Kogi State. If you travel to areas to which the FCO advise against travel, you are particularly at risk and will need a high level of security.”
