Five policemen have been arrested in Niger State. They were charged with the shooting of a villager, Ezekiel Aliyu.
Two of the policemen are in the hospital but will be duly investigated along with the other three once they recuperate.
A PUNCH correspondent reported that the incident was around a N50 note that Aliyu would not give the police.
However, Muhammad Abubakar the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer is not of the opinion that Aliyu was shot over a N50 bribe.
“The police is not an armed robber; we cannot shoot anyone because of N50.”
According to police reports, Aliyu was pulled over for a stop and search and refused to comply, and as he declined they became suspicious and a scuffle arose resulting in the accidental shooting of a rifle.
A mob allegedly gathered and disarmed the mobile policeman and carried the gun away, which was later returned.
John Bahago representing Munya LGA insisted that Aliyu was shot because he refused to give N50 to the mobile policeman and is asking the state House of Assembly to investigate the matter.
