INEC Suspend Elections in Parts of Rivers State due to Violence

2 Min Read

Parts of Rivers state have erupted in violence prompting The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in suspending elections in the affected areas.

The areas suspended were:  Bonny, Andoni, Gokana, and Khana local government areas.

Deputy Director of Public Affairs of INEC, Nick Dazang, confirmed that the elections were suspended in the areas because of violence.

Mr. Dazang said there was also high voters’ apathy in the areas because of the allegations of fake result sheets.

Bonny, Andoni, and Khana were among the local government areas where the Rivers state government and the Peoples Democratic Party alleged fake result sheets were in circulation.

The polls have been largely peaceful according to police though there have been instances of violent acts such as ballots snatching and the like.

In WIiyaakara Ward, Khana Local Government Area, some thugs were said to have snatched election materials around 2.30pm at three units. Also in other places such as Bori and Khana, INEC officials were unable to conduct elections due to threats by thugs in fake military uniforms.

There has been no word as to when elections will finally be conducted in the affected areas.

A 14-seater bus was burnt down in Alode, Eleme Local Government Area, and there were also reports of a shoot-out in Rumuekini, Obio Akpor Local Government Area.

The Army in the state paraded some fake soldiers arrested at Khana who were looking to disrupt the elections.
