The Mayor of Hobart in Indiana, Brian Snedecor has quit the Democratic Party and joined up with the Republican Party ahead of the November 2020 presidential elections.
The mayor officially announced his switch on Wednesday surrounded by city officials, friends, family and at least 200 supporters.
An emotional Snedecor, while explaining his decision, said, “I must be true to my God, my family, myself and those that have supported and believed in me.
“So today I am formally announcing that I am leaving the Democratic Party and that I am joining the Republican party.”
He vowed that his leadership style would remain the same despite the change in party platforms.
“Although my party has changed, my concern, care and love for the citizens of Hobart has not.
“I want Hobart to be a place for business to come and the American Dream to be achieved,” the mayor, who is serving his four consecutive term, said.
Snedecor noted that as a first-time candidate 13 years ago, Democratic Party ideals appealed to him as they were modern, conservative and made the “nation special”.
However, he said, the national Democratic platform has in the last few months gravitated more towards the left.
“The efforts of the progressive left have driven many people, moderates and conservatives, away from the Democratic Party,” Snedecor said.
He disclosed that it took him time to reflect and arrive at the decision but he took the step fully convinced that it was the right one.
