Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo says the government will support the incorporation of entrepreneurship studies in Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) in the state to stem youth migration to Europe.
Obaseki said this while declaring open a three-day Technical and Vocational Education Training workshop in Benin on Thursday.
According to him, technical and vocational education training is also key to stemming the tide of youth migration to foreign countries through dangerous routes.
“ Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) is crucial to the efforts at tackling youth unemployment in the state in particular, and the nation in general.’’
He attributed the situation in the state to low human capacity development and poor attention to technical and vocational education.
The governor expressed regrets that “there is no technical manpower to fill the growing technical demands of the modern economy’’.
According to the governor, the theme of the workshop is “Revamping Technical and Vocational Education in Edo State”.
Obaseki said the theme was in line with the vision of the present administration to boost technical education in the state.
He said a substantial amount had been voted in the 2017 budget for the development of technical and vocational schools in the state.
The governor called on participants at the workshop to offer useful suggestions on ways to revamp TVET in the state.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee, Prof. Julius Ehiovere and the Chairman of the Workshop, Prof. David Awanbor expressed optimism that the workshop would come up with useful suggestions on how to enhance TVET in the state.
In his remarks, the Registrar, National Board for Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe described the workshop as an epoch making one.
She added that technical education would go a long way in accelerating the development of the state.
The workshop which started on Feb. 22, is expected to end on Feb. 24. (NAN)
