The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (task force) has kicked off with the demolition of illegal structures in Lekki.
The demolition began after the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to the owners and occupants in the areas marked for demolition.
The Chairman of the agency, Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the demolition was necessary in view of the construction of the coastal road to serve as an alternative to the Lekki-Epe Expressway and enhance the free flow of traffic in the area.
Egbeyemi said;
“Illegal business operators like iron benders, mechanics, food and fruit vendors and others were served a seven-day removal notice by the state government to remove their property and vacate the area and it expired on Thursday, December 19, 2019. It is an eyesore as these illegal artisans, food vendors and others litter the entire area with refuse and waste materials.

“After the expiration of the removal order, the government gave these illegal squatters additional eight days’ grace to vacate the area before embarking on the clean-up exercise as well as a clampdown on all criminal elements disturbing law-abiding residents within Marwa waterside and the entire Lekki area.”
