Iheanacho Set for Sevilla Exit After Disappointing Spell

3 Min Read

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly on the verge of leaving La Liga side Sevilla in the January transfer window, just six months after joining the club from Leicester City.

The Nigerian forward has struggled to make an impact at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, falling behind Isaac Romero in the pecking order despite the Spaniard’s poor return of only one goal in 14 league appearances.

According to Marca, Sevilla’s sporting director, Victor Orta, is already working on signing a new striker this winter, with Iheanacho identified as surplus to requirements. His struggles reached a tipping point during a recent match when manager García Pimienta substituted him at halftime, opting to debut reserve team forward Álvaro Pascual instead.

Iheanacho’s performance in that game drew heavy criticism from Sevilla fans, with some even ridiculing his inability to press effectively or contribute to the team’s attacking play. Spanish media labeled the home crowd’s reaction—laughter from the stands—as a significant embarrassment for the 27-year-old.

Despite public statements of support from Pimienta, sources suggest the manager is increasingly frustrated with Iheanacho’s lack of impact. The Nigerian was signed to replace Youssef En-Nesyri but has been unable to fill the void left by the former striker.

Sevilla is now exploring options to offload Iheanacho, including a potential loan move or a contract termination. However, the latter option poses financial challenges for the club.

In the meantime, Sevilla has reportedly lined up potential replacements. FC Barcelona’s Ferran Jutglà is said to be the top target, with Brazilian forward Juninho Vieira also under consideration.

Iheanacho’s struggles are not confined to club football. He was substituted at halftime during Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Rwanda in his most recent international appearance, further highlighting his dip in form.

The likely departure of Iheanacho will mark another failed signing for Sevilla’s sporting director, Victor Orta, following the underwhelming spells of Mariano Díaz and Alejo Véliz at the club.

With January fast approaching, both Iheanacho and Sevilla will be eager to resolve the situation and move forward.
