The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, was invited to the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday over a protest by some policemen in Maiduguri, Borno State earlier in the day.
Idris, who had a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in his office, was reportedly summoned to explain the embarrassing situation in the insurgency-ravaged Borno.
The police boss was said to have emerged from the Villa around 2pm but declined to address reporters.
Dozens of policemen had taken to the streets of Maiduguri to demand payment of their six-month unpaid special duty allowances.
However, the Force Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement denied that the policemen engaged in a protest.
He said the men merely went to the state police headquarters to make inquiries about their unpaid allowances.
The police spokesman blamed the non-payment of the allowances on the delay in the passage of the 2018 budget.
He disclosed that the allowances would be paid now that the budget had been signed by the president.
