Ice Cube was a guest on The Wendy Williams show not too long after the Oscar nominations were announced.
Straight Outta Compton, the biopic Ice Cube produced about N.W.A., was a fan and critics’ favourite but wound up with just one nomination: best original screenplay.
“Are you pissed?” asked host Wendy Williams. “I’m not pissed,” answered Ice Cube. “I’m not surprised, you know what I mean? It’s the Oscars, they do what they do.”
This year saw only one nonwhite person get a nomination in a major category — Alejandro G. Iñárritu for directing The Revenant.
In fact, the only nomination Straight Outta Compton got went to four white people its screenwriters: Jonathan Herman, Andrea Berloff, S. Leigh Savidge, and Alan Wenkus.
Ice Cube is handling it just fine. “The people love the movie,” he said to loud applause. “The people support the movie. Number one at the box office, over $200 million at the box office worldwide — you know I can’t be mad. I can’t be mad.”
