The International Criminal Court has questioned the government of South Africa over the country’s decision to allow Omar al-Bashir leave the country despite a court order ordering his arrest.
It will be recalled that herald.ng reported last week an attempt by legislators of opposition party, Democratic Alliance to impeach President Jacob Zuma over his decision to let al-Bashir, a man wanted by the ICC for war crimes in Darfur, leave.
Sudan President, Omar al-Bashir had visited South Africa in June to attend an African Union conference.
Zuma had explained that he could not order al-Bashir’s arrest since it would negate African Union diplomatic rules.
The United States last Monday had expressed concerns over China’s decision to welcome al-Bashir, a man who had an ICC warrant of arrest out for him.
The ICC has given South Africa until October 5 to put up a defence.
