Ibadan court dissolves 9-yr-old marriage over threat to life

Chief Ademola Odunade, the President of a Mapo Customary Court,  on Tuesday dissolved a nine year-old marriage between one Omobola Adegunju and husband,  Adewale,  over threat to life.

Odunade held that the court ended the union between Omobola and Adewale because the duo refused to be pacified.

He advised couples to always exercise patience in their dealings, saying it was  the only way they could  enjoy lasting relationship.

“In the interest of peaceful living, the union between Omobola and Adewale has ceased to be henceforth.

“Custody of the two children produced by the union is granted to Adewale.

“Omobola shall approach the court anytime she desires to see  the children,” the arbitrator said.

In her petition to the court, the plaintiff,  who resides at Academy-Iwo road in Ibadan,  said that her husband was threatening her life.

“When Adewale and I were together in school, he promised me everything, but he soon turned out to be a devil in disguise.

“When I could no longer bear his slaps, punches and kicks, I decided one day that I would stab him if he touched me again.

“Aside from beating me frequently, Adewale had attempted to use one of our children that is now dead for ritual.

“I said this because when that child died, he did not allow me to see the remains and I can’t tell exactly what happened to it till date.

“Adewale has stopped catering for the children’s needs including their education, feeding and other welfare needs.

“Besides, he now has another wife,” Omobola said.

The respondent, who is a lecturer at the University of Ilorin, consented to  the divorce, but denied all the allegations levelled against him.

“My lord, Omobola is such a troublesome woman who relies on blackmail  to attract people’s sympathy.

“Due to her quarrelsomeness, I have not had any rest of mind in my union  since 2009 when I got married to her.

“She is highly disobedient; this is  in addition to her  blackmailing me and my sister that we used one of our children for money ritual.

“In fact, she has also blackmailed my other relatives, calling them all sorts of bad names.

“A court in Ilorin had in 2015 terminated our union and Omobola had since then been keeping the children away from me.

“I even wanted to take the children to Canada when I travelled out the last time, but she prevented me from having access to them.

“I have always transferred N50,000 to her bank account on monthly basis to cater for the children.

“However, I changed it to N30,000 because I have remarried and I can no more afford that amount.

“Worse still, Omobola’s new husband has been threatening my life on phone.

“He had  sent me a dreadful text message to either pay the children’s allowance or be ready  for the consequences, ” Adewale stated.(NAN)
