Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yusuf Lasun has said that he will not step down for Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila because he was duly elected by members of the House of Representatives.

There has been speculation that some South-West leaders are urging Lasun to resign for Hon. Gbajabiamila, but Lasun while addressing journalists outside the National Assembly Complex said“That is a speculation; why will I resign? I went through an election on the mandate of the Speaker (Mr. Yakubu Dogara).”

Lasun who contested for the post alongside Mr. Mohammed Monguno, from Borno State polled 203 votes as against Monguno’s 153.

Meanwhile Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said that election of Hon. Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the House of Representatives signifies that our democracy is fast maturing.

While speaking when he hosted Dogara at the state governor`s lodge in Abuja on Tuesday, Ortom said “Your election was democracy in action and a clear indication of sustainability of democracy in Nigeria.

“It is no longer in doubt that we are maturing. I define democracy as a government of what the people want. It may not be hundred per cent but once the majority agreed that is democracy.

“It is God that crowns leaders. You could have fantastic plans but if God decides otherwise there is nothing you can do.”

Dogara also observed that Nigerians are waiting for their leaders to provide quality leadership.
