‘I was told playing talking drum might prevent me from having kids’ – Ara The Drummer

Aralola Olamuyiwa, known as Ara, is shattering stereotypes as a renowned talking drummer and cultural ambassador for the Ooni of Ife. In a recent appearance on the “Terms And Conditions” podcast, Ara opened up about the challenges she faced defying tradition to pursue her passion for drumming.

“There are certain drums that females traditionally cannot play,” Ara explained. She initially honed her skills on traditional drums before expanding her repertoire to include bass guitar, keyboard, and even set drums. However, Ara craved a unique challenge and set her sights on mastering the talking drum.

“When I sought out teachers, they were hesitant because I’m a woman,” Ara revealed. Undeterred, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, learning the intricate language of the talking drum on her own.

Despite her determination, Ara admitted facing societal pressure. “There were moments of fear,” she confessed. “People warned me playing the drum could prevent me from having children.” These traditional beliefs held no sway over Ara’s resolve, and she went on to break the supposed “jinx,” becoming a mother to a son.
