Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, has confirmed that some voters attacked him in his hometown of Idiyep Ward 2 during Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly polls.
The senior presidential aide blamed the attack on falling electoral standards.
He also lamented inadequate number of security personnel in the area, saying a presidential and national assembly election should witness the presence of more security agents.
Enang said, “Elections have never fallen in standard as much as it has this time and the blame comes to us the practitioners, not the umpire.”
The presidential aide lamented that one person suffered severe injuries that left him hospitalised.
Saturday Sun quoted a witness as saying that trouble started when members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were denied access to the polling unit, which is located close to Enang’s residence.
The witness accused Enang of being in the know about an alleged plot to prevent PDP members and sympathisers from voting at the polling unit.
The witness said, “The APC initially brought some thugs to hijack materials but we resisted them. Thereafter, they decided to prevent PDP members from entering the polling unit which is just around Ita Enang’s house, so the people had to resist him to enable them exercise their civic responsibility.”
