Renowned comedian Ayo Makun, famously known as AY, has extended an apology to Afrobeats sensation Davido for a joke that missed the mark and caused an uproar.
AY faced a wave of criticism after a video circulated on social media where he made a joke at Davido’s expense during a recent performance in Warri. The comedian took aim at the singer’s situation with multiple baby mothers, using it as material for his routine.
During the performance, AY asked the DJ not to play Davido’s ‘Unavailable’ song to introduce him again, questioning how it was possible for someone who is not available to father children.
Realizing the insensitivity and the backlash generated by the joke, AY promptly took to his official Instagram page to express his remorse and tender an apology to Davido and the public. He acknowledged that the joke was poorly delivered and failed to be humorous, especially when compared to its reception during his tour of Canada and the US.
In his apology, AY stated: “I am so sorry for telling that joke the way it came out in Warri. I shouldn’t even call it a joke anymore. It wasn’t funny like it was during my tour of Canada and US and you have every right to be angry after seeing how the blogs used it.”
He continued: “Please know that it is always a learning experience for all of us in the entertainment business. I deserve any backlash coming my way for the joke that was badly delivered. No excuses at all, my Aburo. No reason am. I remain your number one fan, and I love you, @davido.”
