An Igando Customary Court in Lagos State has dissolved the marriage between Azeezat Ayinde and her husband, Mohammed, who allegedly infected his wife with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
The judge, Mr R.I. Adeyeri, held that ‘’since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve it.’’
Adeyeri said that the couple could no longer stay together because the marriage had broken down totally.
‘’Both parties are free to go their separate ways,’’ Adeyeri held.
Thirty-two-year-old Azeezat filed a petition on November 4 and urged the court to dissolve her six-year-old marriage to Ayinde, alleging that her husband infested her with STDs.
The petitioner, who is a teacher, told the court that Ayinde was a womaniser and his constant extra-marital affairs had led to her regular visits to the hospital to treat infections.
“I have been in and out of hospitals treating STDs like gonorrhea, staphylococcus and other infectious diseases due to my husband’s unfaithfulness.
“My husband used to invite a lady to our house in my absence. I have caught them inside our room on different occasions.
“He told me she was his friend’s wife and that she was always lonely which was why he invited her to our home to keep her company,’’ Azeezat said.
She accused her husband of abandonment, saying: “he leaves home and comes back after about a week.’’
Azeezat said she was the one feeding and paying the children’s school fees since her husband did not care.
Forty-year-old Mohammed admitted that ladies always come to their house, but he claimed they were his wife’s friends.
“My wife’s friends always visit me whenever she was not around. I don’t have anything to do with them,’’ the respondent said.
Mohammed said he always stayed back at work because of the distance from home and return at weekends.
“I took care of my children when we were still living together but stopped when my wife packed out of my house 18 months ago,” he said.
