The Imo State University (IMSU) was last Thursday thrown into mourning when a final year Banking and Finance student, Miss Kelechi Assumpta Ibeh, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on her 23rd birthday.
The victim was said to be about cutting her birthday cake and had posted pictures of her birthday ceremony minutes before she was gunned down by the assailants, The Nation reported.
The incident happened on Douglas Road, Owerri, close to the scene where two rival cult groups clashed a day before.
According to witnesses quoted by the paper, members of one of the rival gangs returned to the area in search of their rivals and unleashed terror on residents in the process.
Nearby businesses were said to have closed for fear of being attacked by the armed gang, whose members went about extorting residents at gunpoint.
The gang members reportedly arrived at Kelechi’s event after robbing residents of adjourning streets and demanded her to submit all her valuables.
She was said to have refused to submit her mobile phone when she was shot at close range.
