How service chiefs are contributing to insecurity – National Security Adviser

President Buhari and NSA Monguno

The National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno (rtd), has accused military service chiefs of contributing to insecurity in the country by repeatedly ignoring invitations for meetings in his office.

The NSA reportedly told senators at a closed-door session on Thursday that the security chiefs do not respect his office, hence their constant refusal to attend meetings chaired by him.

According to Vanguard, Monguno told the senators that this has led to a lack of central coordination of the security apparatus in the country, which has caused recent increase in proliferation of firearms, spate of killings by terrorists and kidnapping by hoodlums across the country.

He said that although the Office of the NSA was saddled by virtue of National Security Agencies Act Cap N74 LFN 2010 with the responsibility of coordinating other security offices on behalf of the president, the non-cooperation of the other security heads have made this task impossible to carry out.

Monguno was said to have identified Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, and Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, as the chief culprits.

The NSA said he had reported the matter to President Muhammadu Buhari but nothing had been done about it.

He further urged the National Assembly to amend the National Security Act, while also demanding better training and equipment for the police to better carry out their task of being the first line of defence against security threats in the country.
