What started as a scuffle between a farmer and a herdsman in Gora, a village in Safana Council of Katsina State on Tuesday, has left 12 persons dead.
According to reports, a herdsman had attempted to graze his cattle on a farmland in the area, a move which the farmer rejected, leading to a physical altercation.
During the altercation, the herdsman was said to have killed the farmer and attempted to escape.
However, other farmers in the village got wind of the herdsman’s action, chased and then killed him.
Unknown to them, some bandits hiding in the nearby Rugu forest, which links to Zamfara, Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto states, heard about the herdsman’s killing and mobilised to attack the village.
The bandits, who were said to be armed with sophisticated weapons, shot 10 villagers dead and vanished into thin air.
The village was said to have been deserted immediately after the bandits’ attack.
To forestall further loss of lives, security personnel have since been drafted to the area.
Confirming the incident, the policy image maker in the state, Gambo Isah, added that the situation had been brought under control.
According to Isah, a Superintendent of Police, security personnel drafted to the area included reinforcement from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), mobile police from 27 PMS and three additional units from the state command.
