The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed Sunday night’s attack on the senator representing Anambra South, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah by unidentified gunmen.

The Herald earlier reported that the incident took place in Enugwu Ukwu community, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state, and claimed the lives of some persons in the convoy.

Ubah narrowly escaped the bullets of the suspected assassins.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack, describing the incident as unfortunate and sad.

Ikenga said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Echeng Echeng had already led operatives to the scene of the attack around Nkwo Enugwu Ukwu market area.

The police spokesman said though details of the incident were still sketchy, operatives were on ground while the situation was being monitored.

He said that further details would be communicated to the public.

Media Assistant to Senator Ubah, Mr Kameh Ogbonna explained that the only the senator’s bulletproof vehicle saved his life.

“If not for the bullet proof jeep the senator was riding in, he would have been dead by now.

“We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from all sides and as I speak with you Obum, the special aide to the senator is dead.

“About seven security operatives were hit by the assassins bullet,” Ogbonna said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has condemned in “strong terms” the attack on the senator’s convoy.

The governor said this in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.

While condemning the attack, Soludo said his government was fully determined to wipe out every act of criminality in the state.

He reiterated that “this is the last ditched-effort of a sinking boat” by these criminal elements

He reassured that all security agencies are now on full alert to fish out the perpetrators of this henious attack, who will be made to face the full wrath of the law

The governor commiserated with Ubah and families of his aides who lost their lives as well as the state Commissioner of Police, for the policemen who also lost their lives.
