Members of the House of Representatives have donated N705 million—50% of their basic salaries from July to December 2024—to support President Bola Tinubu’s initiative aimed at assisting vulnerable Nigerians.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the donation on Monday during the Ramadan fast-breaking event with President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.
Abbas explained that the decision was a demonstration of solidarity with Nigerians struggling with economic hardship.
“This is a symbolic gesture to show our concern for the people of Nigeria, as we also feel the hardship they are experiencing,” he said. “We resolved that from July to December 2024, members of the House will sacrifice 50% of their basic salaries and contribute the funds to the government, allowing it to assist those in need.”
The donation comes amid growing discontent over the country’s economic situation, with reports of an impending nationwide mass protest by youths frustrated with the rising cost of living, food scarcity, and unemployment.
In response to these concerns, the House passed a resolution urging those planning the protests to embrace peaceful dialogue with the government. The motion, titled “An appeal to the proponents of the proposed nationwide protest to maintain peace, eschew violence, and open windows for meaningful engagements with the government at all levels,” was sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka, who represents Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency in Ogun State.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa, Abbas confirmed that the funds were ready for disbursement.
“We leave it to Your Excellency to determine how best to allocate these funds to reach those who need food, shelter, and other necessities. This contribution is to show Nigerians that we understand their struggles and stand with them,” he said.
