Hollywood Is Not Friendly To People Who Are Religious – Mayim Bialik

2 Min Read

The Big Bang theory star Mayim Bialik has always been open about her Jewish faith. But the actress, 39, says it’s not easy being religious in Hollywood.

‘I think in general it’s never going to be trendy to be observant or religious in Hollywood circles,’ she told Fox News. ‘There are people I know of faith and we tend to congregate together. I study Jewish texts weekly. That’s something positive to me when you’re a person of faith, it stays with you all the time.’

And Bialik, who was raised as a Modern Reform Jew but has called herself ‘aspiring Modern Orthodox’ as an adult, said that while she doesn’t like ‘the bureaucracy of organized religion’, she has a firm belief in a higher power.

‘I have an unwavering faith in a power greater than myself and I don’t think that will change any more than my belief in gravity will change,’ she told Fox.

And the actress revealed she doesn’t use social media on the Sabbath, and that she marks the day with a traditional family meal or by visiting the synagogue with her two young sons.

Bialik also said fans often ask how she can be a scientist and a religious person at the same time.

‘Being a scientist and a person of faith, people want to know how that is,’ she told Fox. ‘It leads to a lot of interesting conversations that I welcome but a lot of people want to open up a conversation just to tell you, you’re wrong.’
