The killing Saturday of a pregnant woman, Hawawu Ibrahim, and kidnapping of her husband, Lukman, by suspected herdsmen, sparked protests Sunday.

The incident occurred on Ojoku Road, Offa, in the Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

According to sources, the herdsmen attacked the couple around 10 pm as they made their way home.

“Around 10 pm yesterday (Saturday), Lukman, a middle-aged phone dealer selling London-used phones at the Owode Market area, opposite Owode Police Station, Offa, was abducted by unknown gunmen along Ojoku Road, Offa, where he resided; he was on his way to his residence when he and his wife were accosted in their car by unknown gunmen.

“As Lukman was being dragged by the assailants, the wife was shouting for help. This prompted the assailants to shoot her dead. Her body was left at the spot, while Lukman was taken away and till now, his whereabouts remains unknown,” one source that preferred anonymity said.

It was further learnt that Hawawu was gunned down after she identified the assailants.

Angry community members protesting the couple’s ordeal stormed the palace of the Olofa of Offa, Oba Muftau Gbadamosi (Esuwoye11), on Sunday to demand the release of Lukman.

They also called on the security agencies to fish out Hawawu’s killers and bring them to justice.

Confirming the incident, Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ajayi Okasanmi, said that the details of the incident were sketchy.

However, he said that the police have swung into action to rescue the victim
