Herdsmen Raping, Killing Us On Our Farms – Delta Women Protest

2 Min Read

Hundreds of women from Edjekota-Ogor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday stormed the council secretariat and the ‘A’ Division Police Station to protest the nefarious activities of armed herdsmen terrorising the area.

The protest came barely two days after an armed herdsman shot dead a pipeline guard, Anthony Ejabare, on a farm in the community for stopping the herdsman from raping his wife.

The women vowed to block vehicular movement at the Ogor Junction axis of the East/West Road if the armed herdsmen were not evicted from their community within seven days.

The leader of the protesting women, Rebecca Ekakitie, while addressing the council chairman, Godwin Adode and the Divisional Police Officer, Muhammad Zakari, at the Ughelli North council secretariat, said, “We decided to embark on this protest because herdsmen have returned to our area and they have taken over our farmlands. We no longer go to the farm for fear of being attacked.

“Yesterday (Monday), those that went to their farms, were chased by these herdsmen who graze their herds on our crops and kill anyone that tries to challenge them.’’

The council chairman expressed concern over the raping and killing of farmers by armed herdsmen, and assured the protesters that the council was working tirelessly with security agencies to address the situation and apprehend the perpetrators.
