Hate Speech: It is better to live in a racist country, than Nigeria – Lagosian declares

3 Min Read

A Nigerian man has decried the poor state of the nation after his gas cylinder exploded and he was unable to receive immediate medical treatment on burns sustained from the explosion, despite the fact that he could afford it. After his near-death experience, he has concluded that “it is better to live in a racist country, than Nigeria”, a statement that could be regarded as Hate speech with the impending social media regulation bill.

An internet user who goes by the username Mr Vwokay on Twitter has narrated his ordeal in a thread of tweets.

Mr Vwokay who sustained some burns after a gas explosion in his kitchen administered first aid before he called a family member to drive him to a hospital.

However, the traffic on Lagos roads which is a respecter of no persons turned a 5-minute-drive into a 30-minute-journey. The deplorable state of the roads also contributed to the delay.

On their arrival at the hospital, Mr Vwokay said they met an Auxilliary nurse who looked totally clueless on sighting the burns on his legs. He was forced to waste precious minutes waiting for a Trained Doctor to attend to him.

Vwokay in his concluding tweets said had his burns been life-threatening, he would have since been dead.

If I had a heart attack or anything that required swift medical assistance I would have been dead.. I am not close to rich or anything but I can afford basic medical coverage but I couldn’t even make it to the hospital to get the emergency help I needed.

He also stated he would rather live in a racist country where he would have access to basic health care than continue to believe in Nigeria

I gave up on Nigeria yesterday. That second class citizenship in a white racist land with accessibility to basic health amenities and an organized system.

However, Mr. Vwokay could be prosecuted for his tweet if the hate speech bill sponsored by Senator Abdullahi is passed into law.
