The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Jigawa has warned smoking drivers to quench cigarette filters before throwing them away during the harmattan.
The state’s Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr Angus Ibezim, gave the warning
in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday.
Ibezim said the advice became necessary to avoid fire disasters during the dry season, as grasses and shrubs along the roads were dried and could easily catch fire.
He explained that the Corps would continue to sensitise the public on the dangers
posed by the harmattan winds, especially as it relate to fire.
He said “smokers must ensure that they quench the filter of cigarettes they smoked before throwing it out.
“They must avoid that because grasses and shrubs are dry everywhere, including those close to our roads.
“And the harmattan wind can make such filters to ignite fire, which may escalate and consume valuables, houses and even human lives, if care is not taken.” (NAN)
