The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the Federal Government to evolve appropriate political and legal approaches to resolve the case of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and its leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
The Acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, made the appeal on Monday in Abuja when members of the IMN staged a protest in front of the commission’s headquarters.
In a statement signed by Fatimah Mohammad, the Head of Media in the commission. Ovrawah was quoted as saying that it was imperative for the Nigerian Police to exercise restraint in the handling of protests.
The NHRC boss said that this was the only way to prevent violation of rights and dignity of citizens, while maintaining law and order.
She also urged members of the IMN to be peaceful and desist from using children and vulnerable persons during protests.
Ovrawah also advised members of the group and other Nigerians to cultivate peaceful relations and assist government in maintaining law and order.(NAN)
