In Adamawa state, about 15 people were killed with over 35 jail breaks recorded as gunmen attacked the prison and several security facilities in Maiha Local Council in the early hours of yesterday.
The Maiha Divisional Police Station, Maiha Prisons and the presidential lodge located in the area were razed down during the operation.
According to an eye witness report, the gunmen who came in a large number stormed the largely populated town at about 3.30 am on Friday with heavy arms. They fired gunshots, overran the policemen on duty and carted away all the ammunitions in the police custody as they proceeded to the prisons where the inmates were forcibly set free.
The witness added that the gunmen moved to the Local Government Education Authority complex in the town, ransacked it and set it ablaze.
Following the incident, the entire town, the eyewitness explained, was thrown into confusion occasioned by instances of rattling gunshots and the towering column of smoke emanating from the buildings the hoodlums razed down.
State Commissioner of Police, Godfrey Okeke, confirmed the incident.
Okeke who is currently in Maiha, told journalists in a telephone interview that his men need some time to understudy the event and come out with a clear report.
The Police Public Relation Officer, (PPRO), Mohammed Ibrahim (DSP), disclosed that only one police officer was killed during the event and that it was while in exchange of gunshots.
It was gathered that 15 inmates who earlier escaped during the pandemonium were rearrested.
