Gunmen Ambush Maize Farmers, Kill One in Plateau Village

2 Min Read

Unknown gunmen attacked farmers as they worked in their farms in a village in Plateau and killed a 25 year old farmer in the process.

Four farmers were working on their field in Wereng Village, Riyom Local Government when the gunmen attacked. While three of them escaped, one of them was killed.

The body of the deceased farmer was found by the road side a day after the incident.

According to one of the farmers who escaped the attack;

“Four of us going to the farm were ambushed near a public secondary school by men armed with guns and machetes.

“When we approached their location, they started shooting at us, chasing after us as we tried to escape into nearby maize farms.

“Unfortunately, when we could not find Francis after our escape, we organised a search team only for his corpse to be found on Wednesday by the roadside in Wereng.”

While condemning the attack, a youth leader in the village, Davou Gyang stated that the attacks had become a yearly occurrence since 2001.

“Since the Jos crisis of September 7, 2001, we have hardly had a peaceful September in this village.

“The government is slow in responding to the threats the villagers face every day and they are growing impatient.” He said.

“We don’t want a situation where our youths will be forced to take the law into their hands. So, there is a need for those responsible for addressing the security challenge to do their work so that the community will have peace.”

Spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Ubah Ogaba confirmed the incident and stated that the matter had been reported at the divisional police headquarters.
