A gold coin listed in the Guinness Book of Records and worth millions of dollars has been reported stolen.

The gold coin which records a purity of 999.99/1000 was reported to have vanished from a German museum where it was kept on Monday night.

Police in Germany reported that the group responsible for the theft of the 221-pound currency from the Bode Museum in Berlin made away with the treasure before authorities could arrive at the scene of the incident.

The thieves were reported to have snuck into the museum through the window at around 3:30 am on Monday, broken the cabinet where the gold coin named the “Big Maple Leaf” coin was housed and made away with it.

The police spokesman, Stefen Petersen said the 1.18-inch-thick coin with a diameter of 20.9 inches has a face value of 1 million Canadian dollars, or $750,000.

The gold coin by weight however is estimated to be worth almost $4.5 million at market prices.

Petersen however revealed that upon conducting a search of the area, a ladder was found nin the vicinity.

Speaking on the theft, Berlin museums spokesman, Markus Farr disclosed that the coin is on loan to the museum from a private collection.
