A marriage ceremony was thrown into confusion after a 25-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh, India stormed the event armed with a gun to kidnap the groom.
The wedding procession was halted after the woman, Bharti Yadav, appeared in company of two other young men moments before the groom was officially joined to his bride at the altar.
NDTV reported that Bharti and the groom Ashok Yadav had been in love with each other and married secretly but the groom’s family had forced him to marry another girl leading to the kidnap.
Bharti was reported to have arrived at the wedding ceremony in an SUV and armed with a revolver in hand.
She was reported to have said while pointing the gun in hand to the groom’s temple: “This man loves me; he is betraying me by marrying someone else. I will not allow this to happen.”
The incident which left well wishers and others present stunned happened on Tuesday night in Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh.
With the groom still missing, the groom’s father, Ramhet Yadav, told the guests at the wedding: “There was definitely something suspicious about my son. When I tried to visit him in the town where he worked, he would not invite me to his home. Instead, we would meet at a temple, feed me at a food stall near there and then send me home.”
The new bride’s family has however filed a case of kidnapping with the police as a police officer said: “What she did show is that there are some women who can teach young boys that they will be punished for betrayal.”
