Three persons have been confirmed dead in a robbery attack which occurred yesterday, Tuesday 6th June, in front of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.

According to reports, the armed men went straight to the police station in the area, attacked the officers on duty before proceeding to rob at least three banks located outside the University.

The heavily armed men were reported to have killed three persons including a policeman.

Eyewitness report indicated that the heavily armed robbers used explosives to blow up their targets with the rainfall providing the perfect cover for the disturbing noise.

Gunshots were reported to have continued for about an hour as fear washed through the University.

The armed men were reported to have carted away an unknown but large sums and left Automated Teller Machines, ATMs, vandalised in their wake.

The victim banks include Skye Bank, Sterling Bank and First bank.

A resident of the area while speaking about the attack said the streets were deserted as robbers and policemen exchanged fire during the operation.

“Armed robbers attacked the banks in Iwo today. They came this evening and first went staring to the police station and attacked their men there. After that, they went to the area where the banks are located and carried out their operation.

“They killed three policemen and the police also killed one of the robbers. It is a terrible day here in Iwo. I think the banks were aware that they could be attacked because they have been closing by 12noon for the past two months or thereabout.”
