A US-based doctor, Patrick Vollmer, recently posted some sickening photos of the damages caused by contact lenses on women’s eyes, especially those who sleep with them.
Vollmer, who works with Vita Clinic in North Carolina, then made some notes on the condition of one of the affected women.
He explained that the woman was fond of sleeping off while her lenses were on, and when her cornea got affected, the diagnosis revealed that she had what is termed as “cultured pseudomonas ulcer”.
According to Vollmer, some bacteria which developed from her contact had already eaten away her cornea.
He stated, “Pseudomonas (bacteria) is an important cause of ocular morbidity and its opportunistic characteristics quickly lead to permanent blindness. This will be the 4th case of cultured pseudomonas that I’ve treated in my clinic.
“The bacteria explosively eats away at the patient’s cornea in a matter of days leaving a soupy, white necrosis (dead tissue) in its wake.”
Although doctors were able to reduce the spread of her scars through antibiotic drops and steroids, the woman would most likely still have vision problems after her treatment
Vollmer continued, “To be very clear, I don’t ever recommend sleeping in any brand of SOFT contact lenses. The risks outweigh the benefits every time. It takes seconds to remove your contacts but a potential lifetime of irreversible damage if you choose to leave them in.”
Metro UK has reported that one out of 500 contact lens users is usually infected on a yearly basis.
