Nigerian music sensation Burna Boy, renowned globally for his Afro-fusion sounds, faced disappointment as he lost out on all four of his nominations at the 66th Grammy Awards. The highly anticipated ceremony held on February 4th, 2024, saw Burna Boy vying for recognition in prominent categories, but ultimately, victory eluded him in each instance.
The first loss came in the Global Music Performance category, where Burna Boy’s song ‘Alone’ faced fierce competition from Zakir Hussain, Bela Fleck, and Edgar Myer’s ‘Pashto,’ ultimately losing to the trio’s compelling musical creation.
The disappointment continued in the Best African Music Performance category, where South Africa’s talented female rapper, Tyla, secured the win with her song ‘Water,’ triumphing over Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys.’ Tyla’s victory marked a significant moment, clinching the inaugural award for Best African Music Performance at the Grammys.
Moving forward, the Best Melodic Rap Performance category witnessed Burna Boy’s ‘Sittin’ On Top of the World’ facing stiff competition but ultimately falling short against the American duo Lil Durk and J Cole, whose song ‘All My Life’ claimed the coveted Grammy.
The fourth and final loss for Burna Boy unfolded in the Best Global Music Album category, where his album ‘I Told Them,’ alongside Davido’s ‘Timeless,’ faced a formidable opponent in the form of World fusion band Shakti’s ‘This Moment.’ The fusion band emerged victorious, leaving Burna Boy and Davido without the Grammy accolade.
