Prof. Babagana Umara, Borno State Governor has said that his administration used a total sum of N515 million to get political thugs off the streets of Maiduguri. The governor disclosed this during the relaunch of the scheme on Thursday, in which the United Nations Development Programme said it will be partnering with the scheme.
Governor Babagana Umara launched a “cash for sanitation” programme in July 2019, in which 2,862 registered members of political thuggery groups were being paid N30,000 between July and December (six months) to discourage thuggery.
Subsequently, the governor ordered the arrest of any thugs found of the streets and caught engaging in political thuggery at the end of the programme in December.

Governor Umara also disclosed that the N515m was used in making the monthly payments of N30,000 to the youths and that payments were made directly into individuals’ accounts in addition to getting them to acquire vocational skills.
